Game Modes[]
Main article: Game Modes
There are various different Game Modes in Progressbar95. The most notable ones are:
- Progressbar - The main game mode of Progressbar. You have to drag around the progressbar to catch falling segments. In PB-DOS Shell, the progressbar must be controlled with a keyboard. In Progressbar 1X onwards and Server 201X onwards, the progressbar is radial.
- BarOS - The main game mode of BarOS. Since BarOS is different from Progressbar, you have to shoot segments at the moving progressbar, using the panel. In BarOS 11 onwards, the progressbar is radial. In BAR/X and BarOS 10.III onwards, you can tap anywhere to shoot the segments.
- Confetti - Same as Progressbar, but the segments are still. Available in Progressbar 11 onwards, replacing 2 difficulties of the Progressbar mode.
- Tag - Same as BarOS, but the progressbar follows a generated path, and clicking anywhere produces still segments. Available in BarOS 12 onwards, while BarOS 12 replaces the BarOS mode with this one.
- Custom - Customize the game to better suit your playstyle. You can change the game's pace, the segment speed and wobble, the amount of red segments and the pop-up frequency. Only available in Progressbar NOT 4.0, NOT 3.60 and all server systems. The score multiplier depends on the settings. The game pace and segment speed settings influence the multiplier the most.
- Progress Sweeper - A gamemode based on Minesweeper but with blue and orange segments instead of mines. The score multiplier is 1.5x.
- Progress Defender - Tower Defense-like gamemode. The score multiplier is 1.25x.
- Progresstein3d - A gamemode based on a combination of Wolfenstein3d and Windows 95 3D Brick Maze Screensaver. The score multiplier is 1.5x.
- Progresstrix - A gamemode based on Tetris. The score multiplier is 1x.
- Progress Commander - Only available in PB-DOS Shell and Progressbar 95-98 (except NOT 4.0). A gamemode inspired by the DOS file manager "Norton Commander". The score multiplier is 1.25x.
- Color - Available in BarOS 7 onwards. The score multiplier is 2x. In BarOS 10.III onwards, you can tap anywhere to shoot the colored segments.
- Jigsaw Puzzle - Available in BarOS 7 onwards. A game mode inspired by the Puzzle game mode from Mac OS 7.5 onwards. The score multiplier is 2x.
- Progressbar XL - Available in Progressbar 95 plus onwards (except NOT 4.0, Whisper and Largehorn) and all server systems. A gamemode inspired by Microsoft Excel. The score multiplier is 2x.
- Progressball - Available in Progressbar Meme onwards and all server systems. A gamemode inspired by 3D Pinball from Microsoft Plus! 95 and 98, Windows NT 4.0, Me, 2000 and XP, as well as Full Tilt! Pinball. The score multiplier is 1.25x.
- Progressolitaire - Available in Progressbar 95 plus onwards and all server systems. A gamemode inspired by Solitaire from Windows. The score multiplier is 1.25x.
- Progressoid - Available on all 8-bit Computers. A gamemode inspired mostly by Arkanoid, as well as Breakout.
- 3D Screensaver - Available on all Progressbar systems except PB-DOS Shell, NOT 3.60, Chitown and NOT 4.0. The segments are moving in a 3D space rather than from above. The score multiplier is 2x.
- Matrix - Available on all Progressbar systems except PB-DOS Shell, NOT 3.60, Chitown and NOT 4.0. The game mode takes on a digital look and the segments don't wobble. The score multiplier is 2x.
Segments[]
Main article: Segments
Segments can add or remove progress from the progressbar.
- Blue - Gives 5% of progress when collected.
- Light Blue - Gives 10 or 15% of progress based on the multiplier next to the segment.
- Orange/Yellow - Gives 5% of progress but does not give points and Progress Data.
- Red - When collected or touched with any part of the progressbar, this segment will give you a Blue Screen of Death and deduct one heart from your heart counter. If all hearts are deducted, you go back one level.
- Pink - Deducts 5% from your Progressbar when collected, but can be useful. You can also earn a secret achievement if you collect only Pink segments. More info here.
- Gray/Grey - Does absolutely nothing. You can also earn a secret achievement if you collect only Gray segments at 0% of your progress bar. More info here.
- Green - Fills your Progressbar to 100% and corrects any Orange segments. Very rare.
- Flashing/Random - When collected, this segment randomly gives you one of the segments above (except Green or Light Blue). You can also earn a secret achievement if you collect only Random segments. More info here.
- Magenta - Unused segment, but used in the random segment's flashing. It is also used for the random segment in Progressoid.
Progress Points[]
Your main source of points are Progress Points (called PP from now on). You get Progress Points after every level, but how many points you get are based on two factors: Correct Percentages, i.e. collected blue segments (called CP) and Numbers of Levels Beaten (NoLB).
The formula used to calculate Progress Points is:
PP = 10 × CP × NoLB
There is also a limit to the amount of Progress Points that you may receive each round. Each system's limit is different. The limit will be called Level Limit (LL from now on).
DOS to NOT 3.60 | Chitown | 95 | 95+ | NOT 4.0 | 98 | Meme | 2000 | Nepbar to XB | Largehorn and Wista | 7 | 81 | 10 to 11.22 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
50 levels | 70 levels | 10 levels | 20 levels | 50 levels | 30 levels | 40 levels | 50 levels | 60 levels | 70 levels | 80 levels | 90 levels | 1000 levels |
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 to 14, BAR/X , HG and B OS |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
10 levels | 20 levels | 30 levels | 40 levels | 50 levels | 60 levels | 70 levels | 80 levels |
After the LL is reached, the NoLB variable will be fixed to the limit in the given operating system, meaning that any levels beaten after the limit will have its max PP value fixed to:
10 × CP × LL
Bonuses[]

Pop-ups[]
Main article: Pop-ups
There are many pop-ups that can appear in the game, such as:
- Annoying pop-up - Click the Close or X button to close it. Sometimes, the Close button is disabled. At the start of the Progressbar mode, this pop-up sometimes appears in groups.
- Bricks - You can destroy these if you knock the Progressbar against them.
- Calculator - You need to solve a simple 2-digit addition or subtraction to close this Pop-up.
- Checkboxes - Check/uncheck the checkboxes based on the title of the pop-up and click the Close button once it is enabled to close this Pop-up.
- Electricity - When touched, your progressbar will bounce to the other side of the screen.
- Empty Pop-ups - An empty pop-up can appear in arrays from 1 by 1 to 4 by 4. These Pop-ups can severely prevent the player from moving.
- Image Viewer - A pop-up showing an image that sometimes appears in groups. Only appearing at the start of the Progressbar mode.
- Lasers - You will be given a 10 second countdown before they activate. Touching an active laser will give you a BSOD.
- Mad Buttons - This popup contains 1-3x2 Close buttons. Click a wrong Close button and the button will be replaced with an "Oops!" message. Click the correct Close button and it will close.
- Mine - Avoid touching these with your Progressbar. If you do, you will get a Blue Screen of Death.
- Task failed happily - Only sometimes appearing at the start of the Progressbar mode. Clicking OK will remove the button and it will say "OK has failed". The only way to close this pop-up is to shoot it with Decompiler Gun or press the X button in its titlebar.
- Video driver error - This will cause the screen's colors to get jumbled up and inverted in a few wide horizontal stripes. Just wait until it fixes itself or restart. It also appears when you delete DRIVERS in ProgressDOS.
Pop-ups were temporarily removed from versions 0.9900 to 0.995?[verify] in PB-DOS Shell.
Clippy[]
Main article: Clippy
Clippy is based on the Office Assistant Clippit, often nicknamed as "Clippy". It can appear in different forms.
- Normal - Clippy will slowly move towards the progressbar and knock it around.
- Dynamite - It's the same as the Mine pop-up but it moves.
- Clippy 4x - Clippy will hold a yellow 4x sign. Just wait until the countdown goes down. If the countdown reaches 0, Clippy will close itself and will add 5 bonus points, but if you press the OK button, 4 Clippies will spawn and the original Clippy says "I told you!" while disappearing. If you close this pop-up with the Decompiler Gun, it still spawns 4 Clippies.
- Flying - Many Clippies will move from one side of the screen to the other saying "La la la!". Just wait until they are gone.
- Stupid restart - A pop-up with Clippy will appear asking you if you want to restart the system and lose all progress. If you press "Yes, restart now!", the pop-up says "That was a joke! Sorry" and the system will restart. The only way to close this pop-up without restarting is to press "No. Go away!" or the X button[verify]. Another variant is with a countdown of 15 seconds. If the countdown reaches 0, the system restarts. Both of the buttons in this variant will close the pop-up.
- Wave - Multiple Clippies will slide from the top of the screen saying "Wave".
Dog[]
